Title: Lockwood And Co
Author: Jonathan Stroud
Pages:
Overall Rating: 8/10
This novel was read by me as a more adult perspective for this review whereas the others are read and reviewed by my younger sister and so I am not it's target audience. Nethertheless, I enjoyed it greatly. It depicts a thrilling gothic style tale in which Lucy Carlyle joins Lockwood And Co run by Anthony Lockwood and George Karim. The novel is set in a world in which children alone are sensitive to ghosts. It isn't depicted in an overly frightening way but simply a reality a way of life that generations have become to accept as normality. The book is whitty and joyful in part mixed in well with action and mystery.
My only real criticism for this novel is the way in which a male author writes a female narrative perspective. Yes I may be reading too far into the novel made for children but I do have certain concerns about the authenticity of the female experiences and views of the world. At times it didn't read like a teenage girl in a strange world working with men that are reckless and arrogant but an adult male trying to guess what her experience would be. This doesn't distract too far from the book as a whole but would not fully recommend it for children that won't be watching the TV show as well. I find the TV show is better at presenting more rounded complex characters with a sense of identity and accurate teenage experience.
